It has
been a year since Bonbori started the business in March 2013. Good or bad, I have
yet to find out until this March. In fact, we went to this crowded restaurant
in February and learnt that it was Valentine’s Day. I have came across some
restaurants would re-arrange the seating to accommodate more customers on the
V-day, I thought Bonbori was running the same thing as there was barely any
space in between tables. We left the restaurant after getting a table as it was
overly crowded, but it was always in my mind to come back again to give it a
try.
Customers were setting next to each other with barely any space in between tables.
Last
night, we re-visited Bonbori and dined for the very first time. Unfortunately, the
tables are still arranged in the same way the last time I saw them. The cashier
is on the right as we walked in, there are 5 long tables for 8 pax each, 2
square tables for 4 pax each, a round table at the corner good enough for 8
pax, 4 counter seats for 6 pax each and 2 private rooms for 8 and 14 pax,
respectively. I am guessing the space is approximately 1,200 square feet
excluding the kitchen and they manage to fit 100 pax in here when it’s full
house. I personally think the restaurant is too crammed and noisy. There is
barely any space between me and the other customer, who sat beside me. I feel
like we were having a meal in an expensive canteen, and it is also difficult to
talk to the person in front of me unless I raise my voice level.
A round table for 8 at the corner near the entrance.
Luckily, Bonbori
offers a good selection of food, like sushi, maki, hand-roll, donburi or rice
dishes, noodles, soup and so on. Looking at the menu, the food doesn’t appear
to be overly priced, but I would like to be a little reserved until they serve
us the food.
After
waited about 20 minutes, the Aburi Salmon Maki was served. It was nicely done,
the broiled salmon was half-cooked, tasted and smelt nice.
Aburi Salmon Maki at RM 14.90
Nabeyaki udon and Gyuniku don were served about 5 minutues later. The udon base was somewhat light and quite little, it barely covered the udon. It was served together with tempura like shrimp, a slice of red pepper and eggplant.
Nabeyaki Udon at RM 19.90. The soup was too little.
The Gyuniku don appeared to be smaller portion than the illustration in the menu. The beef was sliced 2~3mm thick, cooked in soup and served it dry together with glass noodles and some vegetables. Without any fat on the thick sliced beef and dressing, it was dry and hard. The portion was small. The total damage was RM 57.95 including 10% service charge.
Gyuniku Don at RM 15.90. The rice was served in a pyramid-bowl, the sliced beef was dry and hard, portion was rather small.
Overall, the
food may be just ok, but the ambient is at the downside holding me back from returning. I guess the customers lining up to dine in here probably don't mind it.
