It was a family dinner and I wanted
to go to this famous hawker stall in Jinjang, an area in Kuala Lumpur that I
seldom step foot on.
Long Grilled Fish Seafood Restaurant is the name to look for, but it is actually an open-air food stall operating on
the roadside a.k.a. dai pai dong in Cantonese.
We arrived as early as 6.30pm on one
weekend after the rain and there were people around eating already. We were happy
to secure a table for 7 under the tent near the field to keep us away from the rain and the hot kitchen. They have
many tables at the back of the stall, so need not worry if you arrive later.
They are quite famous for seafood especially
crabs, but we skipped that as we wanted something else. Let's see what we got here.
Creamy butter Japanese snail came first;
the snail was crunchy, the flavourful white cream immediately enriched my taste
buds and satisfied my belly.
The Nyonya squid was sweet, sour and
spicy, the pineapple-based sauce was very refreshing.
Here is the signature clam that is cooked with Chinese wine and garlic, similar to siong tong lala (Cantonese) or clam in broth that is served in most Chinese restaurant. I must say the clam was cooked just nice, the Chinese wine, garlic and chillies are good complement.
German pork knuckle was crispy
outside and tender and juicy inside.
Baby bok choy in egg drop soup was
one of the great and highly recommended dishes I found here. You should forget about the typical sauteed vegetables and go for this one, it's seriously good especially you have kids with you.
Fish duo is fish served in two
flavours, a portion to steam while the other to fry and top with mild spicy creamy
sauce and they were both equally good. *drooling*
The total damage was about RM 260,
not too bad huh? However, considering dining in a hawker stall, the
damage is slightly higher than the others and the average can go more than RM 40
per pax. If you were tempted to order the king prawn, it could cost you about
RM 30 per piece. Having said that, the food is actually worth every penny in my
humble opinion, but you just have to bear with the not so fantastic ambience,
particularly you might get your feet soak wet sitting outside under the tent if
it rains.
If you are a first timer, go on an empty
stomach, let the lady boss recommends you the selection of food that will
surely enrich your taste buds. You may also try some of the dishes we've just ordered, they are good.
I
see they are selling an idea of attractive plating restaurant food at hawker stall and so you will
have to pay a little more as well. On the whole, the cook is very good
at controlling the cooking temperature and so you wouldn’t get the seafood to
be over-cooked, which is important as you really don’t want the squid or snail to
be tough and chewy. They have very broad
selection of seafood, and with different cooking method and sauces to
complement it, it is surely a must visit stall. Not forgetting, you are also welcome to bring a
bottle of wine or two if you like the whole idea of drinking and eating on an
open-air stall, but be sure to leave your wine glasses at home because they
have that covered.
